The Aerospace cluster in Prince Edward Island is comprised primarily of companies serving global commercial aviation markets in manufacturing and MRO (maintenance, repair & overhaul) segments. While these segments represent the core capabilities of our cluster, our members are diversifying and expanding into defence and marine markets as well.
The Canada First Defence Strategy represents a multi-billion dollar strategy aimed at modernizing the Canadian Forces (air, land and sea) to ensure our Nation is well-equipped and ready to respond with a first-class, well-trained and modern military. The delivery of this strategy will yield significant benefits for small and medium sized Canadian business for many years to come by providing long-term stable funding, substantial supplier opportunities, and enhanced positioning and competitiveness on defence contracts at home and abroad. Amongst these opportunities, we have the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS). The NSPS program represents a historical $33 billion dollar commitment by the Government of Canada to renew the combat and non-combat vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and Coast Guard fleets. Notably, the selection of Irving Shipbuilding Inc. of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to construct the combat vessels under the NSPS represents an exemplary opportunity for the Atlantic Region. Working in close partnership with government partners and economic development agencies, we strive to ensure our provincial and regional industries are well-positioned to respond to and prosper from this historic procurement – strengthening our industries, our economies, and our workforce.
With our strong capabilities, positioning, collaborative relationships, and our commitment to quality excellence , Prince Edward Island companies are well positioned to respond to defence market opportunities such as those presented by the Canada First Defence Strategy and the NSPS.
